Bring on the Piggy! Oink Oink!

IMG_0072.jpgIt’s been a weird start to the year…..hence the obvious absence of neomien.

So I’ve decided to adopt a different datebook….the Lunar calendar – like miz Gala Darling, Chinese New Year is a bit of a fav…..love the deafening crackles of those huge strings of firecrackers, the smell of gunpowder, red bits of paper everywhere.

Those flat squares of sticky sweet jerky, the crush to get a table for yum-cha; and the troupes of strapping boys and gals doing the lion dance – pretty amazing, and the oh so unique methods of crowd control – chuck a packet of crackers and watch the area clear…..fast!

Last year I stumbled upon this Buddhist chanting ceremony at night. It was in the gravel carpark on Little Bourke Street – the monks (nuns actually, as I’m pretty sure they were all gals) conducted this ceremony, even our pal Johnnie was there paying his respects with joss sticks.

Gorgeous experience, I found out from a friend that it’s a Chinese tradition to visit a temple before the New Year rings in. Kinda like Christmas service.

It’s happening again this year on Saturday night….Chinese New Year’s Eve, bring on the Pig!
